Hi, my name is Matias J. Ocner and I’m a staff photojournalist at the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald covering breaking news, sports, features, art & entertainment, community news and more.

I graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications with a concentration in photography. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and can speak Spanish fluently.

Previously, I was a freelance photojournalist working for EFE, AFP, Cuba Trade Magazine, Indulge Magazine, the European magazines BILD and Liberation, the Tampa Bay Times, WLRN and other media companies.

In college I was an investigative multimedia fellow at News21, a national journalism fellowship program based at Arizona State University, where I produced investigative stories, photography and videos focused on marijuana for a national audience.

I also interned at the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire producing stories, photos and video for their online publication.

Now I strive to specialize in visual storytelling and hope to use my camera as a tool to increase awareness, challenge assumptions and keep society informed.
